Why The Name Cyberdelia?

So why was the name Cyberdelia chosen for the cybersecurity community webpage? This is an interesting story because I remember racking my brain with co-workers trying to figure out a suitable name for a community driven cybersecurity website. I wanted something that would draw in the cybersecurity community but also show that we are focused on the community more so than industry figures. The name itself; Cyberdelia, doesn't scream cybersecurity community hangout when you look at it so why did we choose that name?

It all boils down to the cult classic movie Hackers, with its counterculture references and focus on the hacker community throughout the movie. Cyberdelia was the local New York City hangout in the movie and was an interesting place that really emphasized this counter culture.

The Cyberdelia exterior is littered with local band and happening flyers and a bunch of its usual visitors are hanging out in front selling different kind of wares. Just from examining the outside of the building someone in this culture can ascertain that this is a decent spot to hang out and potentially meet and exchange information with other likeminded individuals.

The interior of Cyberdelia is where Dade Murphy finally proves to Phreak, Cereal Killer, and Joey that he [Crash Override] is 'elite' by answering a round of questioning on popular security books of the era; specifically the rainbow series. In the photo below, Dade Murphy is describing the NSA Trusted Networks book also known as the ugly red book that won't fit on a shelf. If we examing the background we can see an assortment of people clearly belonging to different social groups in this culture hanging out with one another in one centralized location.

One thing about this venue that makes it truly spectacular is its homage to breaking the norm and developing an interesting playground in its available space, like the ramp seen in the background for rollerblading through the building. The other main draw in the venue is the giant standalone version of Wip3out; the successful Playstation racing game, however in this movie it was a fully rendered alpha version. Dade and Kate played this game in the Cyberdelia scene with Dade beating Kate's high score which truly began their rivalry.

My rambling aside about one of my favorite movies of all time, this venue in the movie Hackers provided the inspiration for the community driven website, a place where cybersecurity personnel can hang out and exchange information in a relaxed environment. It can be a place of knowlege for newcomers to the field and those currently working in it while also providing updated news on the happenings of the industry. Just like Phreak, Cereal Killer, CrashOverride, AcidBurn accepted Joey; the noob of the group, so will Cyberdelia for anyone interested in our field in order to better develop us as well as the industry.
